Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

The Therapy Center of Mississippi Sports Medicine is a full service rehabilitation clinic, established in 2005, specializing in the care of patients with orthopedic and sports-related injuries. At MSMOC, our skilled therapists have easy access to your physician as well as easy access to your medical records, MRI, X-rays, and other information needed to best manage your treatment plan. This continuity of care ensures your individual case is managed according to your specific needs, which means our physical therapists not only provide interventions based on their careful judgments about diagnosis and prognosis, but also confer regularly with your referring physician to optimize and expedite your recovery.

About the Therapy Center

Our goal is to assist your Physician in treating orthopedic problems, as well as the athletic injury while utilizing cutting edge rehabilitation techniques to guide the individual to recovery. Our staff will evaluate your current condition and develop a personalized treatment plan to return you to your maximal level of performance. To facilitate your recovery, we offer: Hivamat Humac 360 isokinetic testing/exercise Aquatherapy including treadmill and bike Sport-specific training

Student Information

Our clinic is actively involved in the advancement of the profession of physical therapy by accepting students as part of their edcuational process. Students are exposed to all aspects of our comprehensive approach to patient care in the clinic, weekly orthopaedic conferences, on-field activities and surgical observation.

Physical Therapy Student Objectives for the Therapy Center at Mississippi Sports Medicine

  • Students are expected to achieve a 25-50% rating on all 24 items of the CPI.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with all modalities including technique, rationale, indications, and contraindications.
  • Demonstrate the ability to complete an orthopedic evaluation in a timely manner.
  • Assess and advance patients exercise programs based on subjective and objective information gathered from patient.
  • Design a home program with appropriate rationale and ask for a return demonstration from the patient at the next visit.
  • Manage time efficiently with the ability to handle 2 patients at a time by the last week of the clinical rotation.
  • Write measurable functional goals that are time referenced appropriately.
  • Attend 3 Wednesday morning conferences
  • Perform physical therapy general orthopedic evaluation within one hour, using correct evaluative tests and measures within the context of the evaluation. Formulate a diagnosis by the end of the evaluation.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with all modalities including technique, rationale, indications, and contraindications
  • Be able to discuss the indications/contraindications for each modality, explaining rationales to patients.
  • Supervise a technician for a patient treatment.
  • Design home program with appropriate rationale and ask for a return demonstration from the patient at the next visit.
  • Manage time efficiently with the ability to handle 2-3 patients at a time by the last week of the clinical rotation.
  • Complete all documentation with 100% accuracy by the end of the day including the initial evaluation and progress note every visit.
  • Write measurable functional goals that are time referenced appropriately.
  • Accurately communicate physical therapy needs to some of your external contacts:
    • be prepared to discuss your patient’s case with the referring physician
    • contact the referring physician to amend the prescription if needed
    • seek and obtain medical information from x-ray, MRI, progress notes from MDs from EHS
  • Attend 3 Wednesday morning conferences
  • Prepare and present an in-service on a topic pertinent to out-patient orthopedics and sports medicine.
  • Identification badges are worn in clear sight at all times.
  • Scrubs must be clean, neat, and in good condition.
  • No clothing with advertisements, sayings, logos.
  • No visible piercing/jewelry except for ears
  • No inappropriate tattooing on face, neck, arms, or hands

The Therapy Center at Mississippi Sports Medicine Physical Therapy Students First Day Information

On your first day, park in one of the last two rows in a numbered parking slot. Enter the doors under the awning of The Therapy Center and introduce yourself to the front desk. Alan Whitfield, therapy center manager, will come meet you at 8:00 am to begin your orientation. If you have any difficulty finding this area, please call our office at 601-949-9110.
The therapy staff wears scrubs. You can wear any color scrubs, as long as there is no print on them. Edging or piping of a different color is fine, just no print scrubs. Also, wear comfortable shoes. Tennis shoes are fine.
