MISSISSIPPI SPORTS MEDICINE: INSIDE OUR SURGEON RESIDENCY & TRAINING PROGRAM
It’s no secret that Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center is a leader in the field, training new generations of orthopedic doctors in sports medicine and joint reconstruction. MSMOC offers unmatched opportunities and benefits through its Sports Medicine and Adult Reconstruction fellowships.
There are so many lists of grants, scholarships, internships and fellowships out there that physicians may find it hard to know which type to pursue. All have their advantages, but fellowships offer unique benefits.
Fellowships are funded opportunities that last for a specified period of time. In the case of Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, fellowships are uniquely designed to follow residency. The fellowships provide a year of specialized training in a specific area of orthopedics.
Because MSMOC’s intensive fellowship develops this level of expertise, completion of the program means that MSMOC fellows are considered specialists in their field.
MSMOC fellowships are valuable because of the real-world experience they offer. Over the course of this valuable year, fellows get extensive time in the OR, honing their skills while also having access to cutting-edge technology.
What a difference a year makes! In the course of the MSMOC fellowship, participants help with over 1,000 procedures. These cases vary widely, so fellows develop knowledge in a wide array of surgical methods.
Of course, that volume of procedures leads to a diversity of rotations. Fellows observe faculty across various rotations, exposing them to a wide range of cases, including complex and rare types.
Along with clocking thousands of hours in the OR across a range of cases, fellows learn the latest uses of advanced technology during these procedures – as well as how and when to use them.
Their training includes the opportunity to practice robotics in surgery. Fellows also become proficient in computer navigation and accelerometer technology.
They also refine their skills with hands-on access to MSMOC’s on-site cadaver lab.
While hands-on surgical experience is one of the things prospective fellows most prize about Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics Center fellowships, the ability to expand knowledge in other areas is equally anticipated.
Among the areas of instruction that fellows of MSMOC will experience in their fellowship year are:
Topics that fellows learn in the Adult Reconstruction fellowship include Total Joint Replacement Surgical procedural practices, such as full and partial knee replacements, and total hip replacements.
Sports Medicine fellows also enjoy extensive instruction on a variety of topics and industry-sponsored courses.
Research is an integral part of both fellowship programs. Participants enjoy access and assistance to MSMOC’s experienced team and to its facilities. Our Director of Research and research coordinators help guide fellows through the process of formatting and submitting articles, as well as the most efficient way to find sources for those articles.
Invaluable resources at MSMOC include the Orthopedic Surgical Library and case logs from faculty physicians, along with CareSense and SOS.
Opportunities to travel to conferences is another important aspect of both the Adult Reconstruction and the Sports Medicine fellowships.
Sports Medicine fellows receive a fully funded trip to the Fall Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) meeting, among other opportunities such as industry-sponsored events and courses.
The Adult Reconstruction fellowship program education travel options include the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) fall and/or spring meetings, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) annual meeting. Industry-sponsored courses are also part of the fellowship, such as traveling to Indiana to tour and learn from a major orthopedic implant manufacturer.
There’s a reason that an MSMOC fellowship is considered the best sports medicine fellowship in Mississippi! MSMOC doesn’t just offer theoretical instruction. It provides fellows with direct experience to gain invaluable experience and insight that they’ll take with them throughout their careers.
Among the opportunities for Sports Medicine fellows are helping to run a free weekend sports clinic for area athletes, as well as being assigned a high school and collegiate football team to cover.
Our partnership with Tulane’s College of Sports Medicine, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, allows fellows to experience both the academic institution and private clinical practice models of practicing sports medicine.
No matter which fellowship physicians pursue at MSMOC, they’re guaranteed to acquire real-world experience, as well as gain other valuable benefits.
High-volume surgical training. Sports medicine fellows participate in an average of 500 shoulder surgeries and 400 knee surgeries, while adult reconstruction fellows help perform 550 knee surgeries and 250 hip surgeries, among others.
Competitive benefits. MSMOC fellows receive a base salary of $57,500, with additional pay for on-call/nights and weekend shifts. They also receive family health insurance, along with gym and country club memberships.
Unmatched mentorship and career development. Through conferences and exposure to both our own physicians and those of our partner facilities, fellows experience unique opportunities to learn from experts in their chosen specialties.
