MS SPORTS MEDICINE'S PICKERING PERFORMS FIRST ROSA® HIP REPLACEMENT IN U.S.

Trevor Pickering, MD, and his team at The Surgery Center at Mississippi Sports Medicine performed the first ROSA® robotic hip replacement in the United States.

Tuesday, September 21st, Trevor Pickering, MD, and his team at The Surgery Center at Mississippi Sports Medicine performed the first ROSA® robotic hip replacement in the United States.

"ROSA® robotic surgery is the latest and newest development in robotics and orthopaedics. It comes with numerous advances that benefit the patients directly. It makes the surgeries more predictable, more efficient and it makes them much more reliable because our precision is greatly increased." says Trevor Pickering, MD, regarding the benefits of ROSA® robotic surgery as opposed to traditional surgery.

Mississippi Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center's surgeons were among the earliest users of ROSA® nationwide in any setting. In 2019, Mississippi Sports Medicine's Dr. Trevor Pickering was the first orthopedic surgeon in the United States to use ROSA® in an outpatient surgery center. Now two years later, the surgeons at Mississippi Sports Medicine have performed more ROSA®-assisted surgeries than any surgeons in Mississippi. Mississippi Sports Medicine’s surgeons are experts in utilizing ROSA® advanced, robotic technology and as a result, The Surgery Center at Mississippi Sports Medicine is a national training site for surgeons all over the country.

A 3D model of the patient's hip is created before surgery using ordinary x-rays from their clinic visit. The surgeon can plan the necessary steps for a precise hip replacement before surgery. This allows the end results to be far superior, allowing more longevity and better healing for the patient. ROSA® robotic procedures are also as accessible as most traditional procedures. "There are no specific requirements to have your surgery done with the ROSA® robotics system; whether it's for a hip or a knee, every patient is a candidate for it. That's one of the beauties of this type of technology that it can benefit anyone that needs a hip or knee replacement." Trevor Pickering, MD, elaborates.

Mississippi Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center is proud to bring groundbreaking medical accomplishments right here to the Magnolia state. "It is a source of pride that this took place here at Mississippi Sports Medicine and not in New York, Chicago, or even California, but right here in Mississippi. I hope this is a source of pride for all Mississippians as well." Pickering adds with a smile.

Dr. Pickering didn't stop at one innovative medical feat. Immediately following the first ROSA® robotic hip replacement, he was the first orthopaedic surgeon in the world to perform a ROSA® robotic total knee replacement, robotic partial knee replacement, and robotic hip replacement all in the same day.
